Women And The Sea Symposium 2015
The first ever ‘Women and the Sea Symposium’ which took place in the National Maritime Museum, Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin www.mariner.ie on 25th – 26th September 2015 and was sponsored by UCD Earth Institute, UCD Humanities Institute, the National Maritime Museum of Ireland and the Atlantic Archipelagos Research Consortium.
The aim of the symposium was to promote greater awareness and understanding of the important roles that women have played, and continue to play, in marine and maritime culture, science, and industry. The symposium brought together researchers from the humanities, sciences, marine industry, art and heritage sectors and welcomed participation from all interested individuals and groups.
It was a unique symposium in an Irish context will included speakers from the Irish Naval Service, the Marine Institute, the Islands Federation, the Irish Institute of Master Mariners, Marine Harvest Ltd, the Daithi O’Murchu Marine Research Station, the Sea Fisheries Protection Authority, lecturers from Irish and UK universities, as well as independent researchers presenting on a variety of maritime topics.
Other topics included a woman’s account of a 19th century ships passage to Africa, Women in the Irish SW Mackerel Fishery 1880 – 1920, the gendering of ships, plus artists exhibiting their art, poetry and film works. Further details may be found on the symposium website http://womenandthesea.com/
